Low Watt Density and High Watt Density Universal Preheaters
What is a Universal Preheater™?
The Universal Preheater™ is a new kind of pre heater. It is a thin, flexible heating pad that provides even, gentle heating to engine oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission oil, water, etc.
- Heat from preheater conducts quickly through the metal body of a fluid vessel to provide a wide heating area and rapidly heat the fluid supply without burning it.
- The preheater mounts to the outside of an oil pan (or storage tank, or reservoir, etc) and it has no coils to clog or fail.
- The preheater warms and holds engine oil at summer-like (LWD) or near engine operating temperatures (HWD) for easier starting and instant oil pressure even in sub-zero weather.
- The preheater uses less power when compared to conventional block heaters. Often, from one to two-thirds less!
- Simple installation - does not invade any systems, nor does it require cutting any holes, welding, etc. Most installations are completed in less than an hour. Permanently mounts to the outside of a engine oil pan (or storage tank, hydraulic reservoir, transmission housing, gearbox, water tank, etc). Ideally, the preheater is installed at the bottom of the fluid vessel to be heated because heat rises, however, the preheater can also be installed on the side of the fluid vessel (below the level of the fluid).
- Every LWD Universal Preheater™ carries a three year warranty. Every HWD Universal preheater™ carries a six month warranty.
Three types of Preheaters are available, all are offered with peel and stick adhesive (special custom heaters can be designed, let us know your specifications):
AC Powered Low Watt Density (LWD)
- 120VAC
- 5 watts per square inch
- 0.050 inch thick (Preheater, RTV adhesive and double insulation pad = 1/2" thick)
The LWD (Low Watt Density) line of Preheaters offers the most flexible installation options. The LWD line of Preheaters are easier to install than the HWD (High Watt Density) because they tolerate air pockets without failing. They can be installed over raised and recessed bolt heads, ribs, deep dings, pebble finish or other rough surfaces, etc. Peak temperatures for each LWD model are estimated at 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) in the first hour from zero degrees F and a maximum of 120 degrees F (49 degrees C) from six to eight hours. These are "rule of thumb" estimates and actual performance is governed by many factors such as ambient temperature, wind chill, type of housing material and its thickness as well as viscosity of the fluid being heated.
AC Powered High Watt Density (HWD)
- 120VAC or 240VAC
- 13 watts per square inch
- 0.050 inch thick (Preheater, RTV adhesive and single insulation pad = 1/4" thick)
The HWD (High Watt Density) line of Preheaters require slightly more attention to detail when installing. When installed, the HWD Preheater must have full contact with the metal of the housing to avoid premature failure. The HWD Preheater cannot be installed over raised and recessed bolt heads, ribs, deep dings, pebble finish or other rough surfaces, etc. When sized to our recommendations, the HWD Preheater peaks at an estimated 73 degrees F (23 degrees C) in the first hour (from zero degrees F) and to 150-200 degrees F (66-94 degrees C) after six to eight hours. These are "rule of thumb" estimates and actual performance is governed by many factors such as ambient temperature, wind chill, type of housing material and its thickness as well as viscosity of the fluid being heated.
Direct Current Low Watt Density (DCLWD)
- 12VDC, Direct Current
- 5 watts per square inch
- 0.050 inch thick (Preheater, RTV adhesive and single insulation pad = 1/4" thick)
The Direct Current Low Watt Density (DCLWD) line of Preheaters have the same features as the Low Watt Density Preheater and are limited to 300W maximum and limited / regulated by available DC amperage / power. The DCLWD heaters ship with with pigtail electrical leads only; Order the insulation pad and RTV adhesive seperately.
Thermostats
Thermostats are not required as Universal Preheaters are engineered and sized appropriately to the capacity of each reservoir or housing. However, thermostats are available for those applications requiring them. Our System Thermostat is custom designed to your temperature specification. The System Thermostat is bi-metallic, rated at 15 amps and includes a 20 degree range between "on" and "off". Please specify the "on" temperature. The System Thermostat module is mounted independently of the Preheater.
A brief primer on thermostats: when power is first applied to the Preheater, the Preheater will heat until it reaches the maximum temperature (the "off" temperature) governed by the thermostat and then the Preheater will stop heating (turn "off"). When the thermostat senses that the temperature is lower than the minimum (the "on" temperature), the Preheater will turn on again and the cycle will continue.
Plastic Reservoirs
Plastic Reservoirs require special attention in order to avoid melting the reservoir. Use a System Thermostat to regulate the maximum heater temperature. The thermostat should be set to a maximum temperature that will not melt the plastic, generally 150 degrees F (65 degrees C). Please specify "Plastic Reservoir" when ordering to receive an embedded thermostat with your Preheater to protect the plastic reservoir

The Universal Preheater™ converts the metal of a housing into a heat transfer element that exposes a large square inch surface of fluid to low watt heat. This design eliminates any chance of burning the fluid supply and still allows rapid heating of the fluid supply.
